Montreal 'wedding band' has a worldly sound

BALKAN AND Eastern European music has traditionally been very passionate, joyful and lively. Its sweet tempered instruments and delicate strains of harmonies can either tug at your heartstrings, bringing tears to your eyes or pick you up from your seat and make your body move in spite of yourself. Lubo Alexandrov and his band Kaba Horo do just that and more. The band won the 2007 Juno award for World Music Album of the Year.

The name Kaba Horo is an attractive mixture of the Turkish word kaba meaning low or rough and the Bulgarian word horo which is a traditional Bulgarian dance, suggesting the lively, cultural essence of the music and the variety of musical inspirations of the band’s sound.

The diversity of the band’s music comes from the blend of Bulgarian Gypsy and Montreal-based musicians. Lubo Alexandrov, with his signature double-necked guitar, is backed by Emil Iliev’s nimble accordion playing coupled with the jazzy touch of Eric Hove’s saxophone, the groove of Georgi Stankov’s bass and Martin Auguste’s expertise on the skins. Suleyman Ozatilan brings in the flavour of gypsy music from Turkey with the traditional Turkish instrument, the darbuka.

The band won the 2007 Juno award for World Music Album of the Year.

The band’s musical philosophy is deeply etched in the gypsy concept of having fun and dancing at festive events like weddings. This concept is aptly described by Lubo, the founder of the band. “We are a wedding band. We like making people dance and have fun. We like to party and enjoy ourselves. Our music is for the moment, to make our audience happy. I like to write music that I enjoy and music that moves me. The kind of music I write is hard to verbalize. Jazz and classical music, you can conceptualize.  I think it does disfavour to the gypsies to conceptualize their sound because it kills the idea of living the music.”

Musical inspiration for the band’s music is shaped by the gypsy culture of singing about romance or family. Most of the ensemble’s songs are about a new couple at a wedding or the love of a father for his daughter.

Lead guitarist Lubo has a degree in jazz from Concordia University. His passion for pop, rock, reggae and funk bring in a very catchy fusion to the band’s sound. The band sings mostly in Romany, the language of the gypsies, with some songs in Turkish and Bulgarian.
