RestoArt Bar Sing Sing serves up great beats…and eats

 Montreal-based Kops Krew, an extended family made up of DJs, musical acts and graffiti-artist promoters, has made a name for itself over the last decade. Although known for its New Year’s Eve parties and murals in and out of town, members of Kops, have begun branching out in hopes of taking their creativity to another level. One such member is Sebastien Marin, bass player of the band Dead Messenger, virtuoso piano player and relentless promoter. His latest venture is becoming a co-owner of the Kopshop Gallery and the restobar Sing Sing. The magazine caught up with Sebastien on this new addition to Montreal’s night scene.
Montréal Magazine: So why the name Sing Sing for a bar?
Sebastien Marin: Well, there is a connection to the title song ‘‘Kops. Sing Sing: A Life Behind Bars.’’ Also, I thought it would be a catchy name for a restobar.
MM: What kind of entertainment can one expect at Sing Sing?
SM: Well, we wanted to create a different environment: A venue that serves good food and drink; and showcases interesting acts such as DJs and live performances, and good art in the gallery section.
We thought it would be clever and unique to have an art gallery and restobar at the same location.
MM: What kind of food do you serve?
SM: We are right next to Waldman’s so we serve lots of fresh seafood. We also serve vegetarian meals and offer some fusion dishes.
MM: What is Kopshop?
SM: The Kopshop Gallery has been around for two years now. We were at 111, rue Roy, but decided a move was needed. We thought it would be clever and unique to have an art gallery and restobar at the same location. The gallery has held exhibitions from artists such as Other, Daniel Johnston, Senz 2 and Josheth Auther just to name a few.
MM: Any plans to branch out to other types of businesses?
SM: Other businesses? One mistake at time, please! I know I’ve always wanted to run my own bar. When I was 10 years old, I actually stole my father’s liquor and set up a makeshift bar in my basement. I would then invite him and his friends for drinks at a place called Sebastien and Roger’s Bar. All I was doing was selling the old man’s booze at 20$ a drink. I made a killing while it lasted. Also, it doesn’t hurt that I’m a big fan of eating and drinking. It’s a little early in the day but I could go for shrimp and Chorizo linguini pasta and a Godfather on ice.
