There's always something happening on the strip that never sleeps

Crescent Street's annual F1 Canadian Grand Prix party in June is Mardi Gras à la Montréalais. Crowds jam the car-free street to ogle the racing displays; terraces and patios brim with revellers hollering at the crowds below; live bands pump out party anthems on the open-air stage. Everywhere, banners, race flags and street vendors add to the chaos. In this four-day celebration of speed, noise and slackened inhibitions, throngs of party-goers come to experience the energy and adrenaline set to burn up the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit. This is the pomp and pageantry that define Crescent.
Crescent is a hotbed for Montreal's endless summertime celebrations. Besides the Grand Prix weekend, it plays host to the annual Porsche Day, Corona Summer Terrace Festival (in mid July), Brazilian Carnival (no dates have been set yet), Moto Fest (August) and the Ford Racing Festival (August).
Tourist trap or trendy oasis?
Crescent is a tacky tourist trap to some and a trendy oasis to others, but most don't equate the strip with sophistication. Still, it does offer something for more refined sensibilities. There's Maevva for Portuguese-style tapas, and upscale Russian eatery Troika. At Spa St. James, you can get everything from a chocolate body wrap to a paraffin-wax pedicure. Pick up haute menswear at Albert Uomo and Hugo Boss, Art Nouveau-inspired jewellery at Kaufmann de Suisse, and luxury watches from Harry Winston, Roger Dubuis and Cartier at Matt Baily.
Whatever kind of night you're looking for, you can find it here -- clubs, bars, lounges and pick-up joints abound.
Whatever kind of night you're looking for, you can find it here - clubs, pubs, bars, lounges and pick-up joints abound. The 5 à 7 crowd hits Newtown, students flock to Brutopia's Trivia Nights (Mondays) to knock back raspberry-flavoured beer ($4.50 before 8 pm) and people looking for a more mellow evening take to Hurley's, with its cosy booths, oak-panelled walls and jovial atmosphere. Sunday nights are, oddly enough, perfect for anyone who craves the spotlight. There's open mic at Brutopia, ladies night at Club Vatican and the karaoke competition at Vocalz (the prize is $50 worth of booze). Another kind of attention can be gotten any given night at Thursday's - it's open seven days a week until the wee morning hours. No matter what time of year or day, though, Crescent is a place to see and be seen.
